Vice President His Excellency Kashim Shettima officially opened the 22nd National Sports Festival at the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State, in a vibrant ceremony marked by unity and celebration. The event, dubbed the “Ogun Games,” saw Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, call on the Federal Government and state authorities to increase investments in sports development across Nigeria.

Speaking to journalists at the event, Hon. Enabulele emphasized that resources devoted to youth and sports are never wasted, describing sports as a vital pillar of national unity. “The National Sports Festival is not just about celebrating athletic excellence but also about celebrating Nigeria’s existence and its unity in diversity,” he said. He praised the Federal Government and organizers for sustaining the festival, which he described as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s unity.

Enabulele expressed gratitude to Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for enabling Team Edo’s participation. “Our athletes are here to compete cleanly and showcase their talents,” he stated, promising a stellar performance from the Edo contingent.

Team Edo dazzled spectators in their traditional red and white tracksuits as they were led by Hon. Enabulele, the delegation included board members, the Permanent Secretary of the Commission, and chairmen of various state sports associations.

This year’s festival introduces a unique feature with the inclusion of Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) alongside participants from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, adding to the event’s spectacle.

Enabulele urged governments at all levels to prioritize sports investment, highlighting its role in shaping youth and society. “The enthusiasm and friendship fostered by sports show that every resource invested is worthwhile,” he concluded.
