The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has issued a massive evacuation order for residents of Khan Younis, instructing them to move towards al-Mawasi in the west of the Gaza strip. This directive comes as the IDF prepares to launch an “unprecedented attack” in the area, which it has declared a “dangerous combat zone”. IDF spokesperson Avichay Adraee emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Terrorist organizations have brought you disaster. For your safety, evacuate immediately.”
The evacuation order covers not only Khan Younis but also the areas of Bani Suhaila and Abasan. Residents are understandably distressed, with one woman describing the order as her “worst nightmare”. Another woman, already living under an evacuation order in central Gaza, expressed her desperation, saying, “I won’t move because there is no place to go”.
The IDF’s Objectives and Actions
The IDF launched Operation Gideon’s Chariots on Saturday, with the aim of “destroying the capabilities of terrorist organizations” in the area. According to reports, over 100 people have been killed in the last 24 hours. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Israel will “take control” of the entire Gaza strip, asserting, “We are engaged in massive fighting – intense and substantial – and there is progress. We are going to take control of all areas of the Strip, that’s what we’re going to do”.
Humanitarian Concerns and Consequences
The IDF’s actions have raised concerns about the humanitarian situation in Gaza. A warehouse containing medical supplies at the Nasser Hospital was hit by an Israeli strike, prompting a British charity, Medical Aid for Palestinians, to lament, “We are just seeing all our work being burned to ashes”. The situation is further complicated by reports of Israeli special forces operating undercover, resulting in the death of a senior member of the Popular Resistance Committees, Ahmad Sarhan.
Hostages and Blockade
Meanwhile, a group representing hostage families has warned that the operation poses “grave and escalating dangers” to those still held in Gaza. Testimonies from released hostages describe worsened treatment, including physical abuse and reduced food. In response to international pressure, Israel has agreed to allow a “basic amount of food” into Gaza to prevent a starvation crisis, ending a 10-week blockade.
Casualties and Displacement
The conflict has resulted in significant human suffering, with over 53,000 Palestinians killed during Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. The recent escalation has seen nearly 100 people killed in Israeli attacks, and many more displaced. As the situation continues to unfold, the international community remains concerned about the humanitarian implications and the prospects for peace.
