Another Building Collapse in Lagos: Panic in Mushin as One-Storey Building Crumbles—Rescue Efforts Ongoing
Panic swept through Mushin, Lagos, on Sunday afternoon when a one-storey building under construction abruptly collapsed, trapping an unspecified number of individuals beneath the rubble.
The incident took place at 96 Ishaga Road, directly opposite the Idi Araba Central Mosque, a location typically bustling with both residential and commercial activity.
Eyewitnesses described a loud, crashing sound followed by frantic cries for help as clouds of dust and concrete engulfed the area. The building, which was still undergoing construction, reportedly caved in without warning, sparking chaos and prompting immediate emergency calls from local residents.
Emergency responders from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services were quickly mobilised to the scene. Upon arrival, rescue workers commenced a coordinated effort to locate and extract victims from the collapsed structure.
Within hours, three individuals—whose identities remain undisclosed—were successfully pulled from the rubble alive and transported to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.
Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, Mr. Shakiru Amodu, stated, “A male adult has been rescued while efforts are ongoing to rescue other victims trapped under the rubble.”
As of the time of this report, rescue operations are still ongoing. Emergency personnel continue to work tirelessly, using excavation equipment and hand tools in a race against time to reach anyone who may still be alive beneath the debris. The total number of people trapped has yet to be determined.
This latest collapse is the second such incident to rock Lagos in under a month, raising serious concerns about building safety standards and regulatory enforcement across the state.
Just weeks earlier, on the morning of Saturday, April 19, IREPORT247NEWS reported the collapse of a two-storey building in the Ojodu area of Lagos. That structure housed the Equal Rights Restaurant and gave way around 9:00 am, trapping several individuals including restaurant staff, customers, and an entire family who were on the premises at the time.
The Ojodu incident also drew a large-scale emergency response, with multiple victims reportedly injured and some feared dead. Authorities had promised to investigate the cause of that collapse, citing potential structural failures, poor workmanship, or non-compliance with approved building plans.
With the Mushin collapse now following closely on the heels of the Ojodu tragedy, public outrage is mounting, as residents question the effectiveness of building regulations and the oversight of construction projects in densely populated urban neighborhoods.
Several community leaders and residents in Mushin have expressed frustration, noting that visible signs of structural instability in the now-collapsed building had been previously observed but seemingly ignored by developers or regulators. Many are now calling on the Lagos State Government and relevant agencies to intensify their monitoring of construction sites and enforce stricter penalties on violators of building codes.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Nigeria Police, and other supporting agencies have secured the site of the Mushin collapse to ensure the safety of both rescue workers and concerned onlookers.
