VP Shettima to Open 22nd National Sports Festival

Vice President Kashim Shettima will today declare the 22nd National Sports Festival, christened the ‘Gateway Games 2024’, open in a vibrant ceremony showcasing cultural splendor and athletic excellence in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The fortnight-long event will see over 10,000 athletes from Nigeria’s 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) team compete in 33 sporting events, making this the most extensive edition in the festival’s history since its inception in 1973.

Ogun State, hosting the festival for the second time since 2006, is set to embody the spirit of patriotism, unity, and celebration that defines the National Sports Festival. Governor Dapo Abiodun has affirmed the state’s readiness to welcome athletes, officials, and visitors, ensuring a seamless experience.

According to Kola Daniel, Special Assistant to the Director General of the National Sports Commission, competitions will be held across various venues, including the Alake Sports Centre, MKO Abiola Stadium, and Remo Stars Stadium. Babcock University will serve as the Games Village, offering a secure and comfortable environment for participants.
