The imposition of a candidate without consultation or credible primary election is unacceptable. It is an insult to the dedicated party faithful who have worked tirelessly to build the APC’s presence and influence in Yaba
Tensions are brewing within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State, as party leaders and key stakeholders have strongly opposed the alleged imposition of a chairmanship candidate ahead of the upcoming local government elections scheduled for July 2025.
In a strongly worded letter addressed to the Chairman of the APC Electoral Committee, Mr. Babatunde Ogala, the party’s ward representatives across all nine wards in the LCDA called for the immediate cancellation of any pre-arranged endorsement and demanded a fresh and transparent primary election to determine the flagbearer for the chairmanship position.
The letter, co-signed by representatives from all nine wards—Ward A (Domingo Babajide), Ward B (Kemi Aboyarin), Ward C (Adediran Olorunnimbe), Ward D (Taoreed Abiona), Ward E (Alani Ifatokun), Ward F (Oladunjoye Omoniyi), Ward G (Olaofe Fatai), Ward H (Idayat Abdul Rasaq), and Ward I (Shakiru Adebowale)—described the process leading to the selection of the current candidate as “undemocratic, provocative, and a clear affront to the will of the people.”
The signatories, identifying themselves collectively as the Apex Leadership of APC in Yaba, emphasized that the alleged imposition not only undermines the principles of internal democracy but also poses a significant threat to the party’s unity and cohesion at the grassroots level. According to them, the process has sidelined loyal party members, ignored due process, and disregarded the voice of the local party structure.
“The imposition of a candidate without consultation or credible primary election is unacceptable. It is an insult to the dedicated party faithful who have worked tirelessly to build the APC’s presence and influence in Yaba,” the statement read in part.
The leaders warned that such undemocratic practices could fuel discontent among party members, erode public trust, and ultimately jeopardize the APC’s chances in the forthcoming elections. They urged the party leadership, both at the state and national levels, to act swiftly and decisively to restore transparency and fairness to the nomination process.
“We implore the leadership of our great party to immediately intervene, cancel the purported selection, and organize a free, fair, and inclusive primary that reflects the will of the people. Failure to do so will not only damage the credibility of the APC in Yaba LCDA but could also incite avoidable internal crises with long-term consequences,” the letter added.
This development marks a growing wave of dissent within local APC chapters across Lagos State, as internal party democracy becomes a major concern ahead of the local council polls. Stakeholders are calling for a level playing field to foster unity, legitimacy, and electoral success for the ruling party at the grassroots.
