Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Education and Healthcare, Lauds Traditional Rulers During Meeting with New Alaafin of Oyo

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to prioritising education and healthcare as key pillars for national development.

Speaking on Friday during a courtesy visit by the newly crowned 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade I, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the President also emphasised the strategic role of traditional institutions in the governance and socio-cultural evolution of Nigeria.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu congratulated the Alaafin on his ascension to the revered throne, describing the event as both divinely orchestrated and historically significant.

“It is a great joy and honour for me. Your ascendancy to the throne of your forefathers is not only historic but also the will of God and the desire of your people,” the President said.

Drawing a parallel between the Alaafin’s rise and his own journey to the presidency, Tinubu remarked that both experiences reflect divine purpose, having followed demanding paths marked by uncertainty, rigorous processes, and emotional trials. He noted that such trials serve as preparation for the responsibilities of leadership.

Tinubu praised the traditional council of Oyo for overseeing a smooth succession following the passing of the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III in April 2022. He particularly commended Oba Owoade for upholding Yoruba values and culture, even during his time abroad.

“I am proud of your character and discipline. You have preserved the values and dignity of your people, even while residing in Canada. Now, you have become a beacon of hope for sustaining the Yoruba heritage,” the President said.

Reiterating his administration’s priorities, Tinubu underscored education and healthcare as foundational to the country’s long-term prosperity. He called for collaborative efforts between government and traditional institutions to ensure inclusive and effective policy implementation.

“We cannot achieve peace, stability, and prosperity alone. We must work together—government and traditional rulers—to build a nation where cultural values are preserved, and the lives of our citizens are improved,” he said.
“Education and Medicare remain top priorities for my administration. We are committed to uplifting these sectors while encouraging broad participation.”

President Tinubu also acknowledged the contribution of individuals from the Oyo Kingdom who currently serve in his administration. He highlighted Ambassador Victor Adeleke, the State Chief of Protocol, and Colonel Nurudeen Alowonle Yusuf, his Aide-de-Camp and king-designate of Ilemonaland in Kwara State, both of whom have ancestral links to Oyo.

In his response, Oba Owoade expressed deep appreciation for the President’s warm reception and reaffirmed the support of the Oyo traditional council for Tinubu’s administration. He described the meeting as a historic moment for the people of Oyo.

“Today, I speak not only as the custodian of tradition but also as the voice of my people who are greatly honoured by your audience,” the monarch stated.
“Your warmth goes beyond formality; it reflects your statesmanship and respect for traditional institutions.”

The Alaafin hailed President Tinubu’s leadership qualities, noting his legacy as an activist, political strategist, and now national leader. He commended the administration’s initiatives in economic reform, infrastructure development, social welfare, youth empowerment, agricultural investment, and national security.

Calling for sustained collaboration, Oba Owoade added, “Nigeria looks up to you for leadership and restoration. We seek a vision anchored on justice, equity, and inclusive progress. Oyo is ready. The Yoruba people are ready. Nigerians are ready.”
