Governor Umo Eno Issues Stern Warning to Indolent and Insubordinate Cabinet Members

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has issued a strong warning to members of his cabinet, particularly commissioners and special advisers, who display acts of laziness, negligence, and insubordination during official duties.

The Governor made it clear that such conduct will no longer be tolerated and that any cabinet member found wanting will be immediately relieved of their duties—regardless of gender, office, or political connections.

Governor Eno expressed deep dissatisfaction over the apparent nonchalance exhibited by some members of his cabinet, especially during public functions. Reports indicate that the Governor became visibly angry during a recent incident where, after attending a scheduled event, he made an unscheduled stop at another official engagement. To his dismay, a number of key cabinet members failed to accompany him, an act he described as gross insubordination and dereliction of duty.

Speaking publicly and emphatically to make his stance known, Governor Eno stated:
“Starting from now, henceforth, I like everyone to hear, that’s why I’m speaking publicly. When you hear that I have fired a commissioner from your local government, it’s due to insubordination.”

He explained that such conduct was unacceptable, especially from individuals who had taken an oath of office to serve the state diligently and loyally.

He emphasized that political appointments are not ceremonial or part-time positions, but full-time commitments that require dedication, presence, and readiness to serve the people at all times.

Governor Eno also rebuked the excuse some appointees had given—that their offices were not adequately funded. According to him, lack of sufficient funding should never justify abandoning official responsibilities or failing to attend state functions. He reminded them that they are the face of government to the public and must, therefore, uphold the integrity and discipline expected of their positions.

The Governor likened his cabinet members to a football team’s “first eleven,” underscoring the importance of their presence and participation in all official engagements.

“You are my first eleven. You must be around me. I don’t have to disclose where I’m going next. Once you’re with me, you must follow me and return with me to the Governor’s Lodge,” he asserted.

Governor Eno further highlighted his own track record as a former commissioner, noting that he never abandoned his governor or prioritized personal interests over official duties.

He warned that any commissioner or adviser who chooses to prioritize personal engagements at the expense of their official role would be shown the door.
“I was a commissioner myself, and I can’t remember any day I left my Governor behind,” he said.

In conclusion, Governor Eno reminded all political office holders under his administration of the solemn commitment they made to the people of Akwa Ibom State through the ARISE Agenda—his administration’s policy blueprint aimed at accelerating development and delivering good governance. He urged them to recommit to the mandate they accepted or be ready to face immediate dismissal.
