Despite the full ransom being paid, his abductors never released him. Yesterday, his family was devastated to learn that he had been killed

Tragedy has struck the Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State as a prominent traditional title holder, Malam Sani Dandada, the Madawakin Fawa of Faskari, was killed by bandits who had earlier abducted him, despite receiving a full ransom from his family.

According to security sources, Malam Dandada was kidnapped on April 19, 2025, while returning from a trip to Daura, a historic town in Katsina State. He was reportedly intercepted along a major route by armed men suspected to be part of a notorious bandit group that has been terrorising rural communities in the region.

Efforts were immediately launched by family members and local stakeholders to secure his release. After intense negotiations, the abductors allegedly demanded a significant sum as ransom. The family, in a desperate bid to ensure his safe return, mobilised and paid the full amount requested.

However, hopes for his return were dashed when, despite fulfilling the demands of the kidnappers, Dandada was not released. After weeks of silence and growing anxiety, the worst fears of the family were confirmed.

Confirming the development, a security analyst and local commentator who goes by the name Bakatsine shared the heartbreaking news on Friday, May 16.

“Despite the full ransom being paid, his abductors never released him. Yesterday, his family was devastated to learn that he had been killed,” Bakatsine stated.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, but local sources suggest he may have been killed shortly after the ransom was delivered or during captivity.

The murder of Malam Dandada has sent shockwaves through the Faskari community and beyond, as he was a respected figure in the traditional institution and well-known for his commitment to peace and community development. Residents are mourning his loss and demanding justice.

This incident adds to the growing list of violent crimes perpetrated by bandit groups in the North-West region, particularly in Katsina State, where abductions for ransom, armed assaults, and killings have become disturbingly frequent despite ongoing military and security operations.

Community leaders and residents are now urging the Katsina State Government and federal authorities to intensify efforts to combat banditry and ensure that those responsible for Dandada’s death are brought to justice.

Calls have also been renewed for reforms in ransom negotiation protocols, as well as improved coordination between security agencies, local vigilantes, and traditional rulers to prevent further bloodshed.

As of the time of this report, state authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
