President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially inducted two brand-new AGUSTA 109 Trekker helicopters into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fleet, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing modernization and strengthening of Nigeria’s defense capabilities. The induction ceremony took place at the Presidential Air Fleet Apron in Abuja, coinciding with the 61st anniversary celebrations of the Nigerian Air Force.
Represented by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu commended the NAF for its pivotal role in safeguarding Nigeria’s national security and reiterated the federal government’s unwavering support for defense sector modernization. Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information at the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters, highlighted the event as a critical step toward enhancing the country’s aerial capabilities.
President Tinubu described the Nigerian Air Force as a “cynosure of operational excellence” and a symbol of national pride, particularly noting its strategic roles in regional peacekeeping and security operations across West Africa — including The Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Mali. He emphasized that the acquisition of these new AGUSTA 109 Trekker helicopters would significantly boost the Air Force’s operational efficiency, versatility, and rapid response capabilities.
“These helicopters are part of a broader effort to modernize our armed forces. Alongside the recently acquired Diamond-62 surveillance aircraft, T-129 ATAK attack helicopters, and King Air 360i planes, this investment demonstrates our commitment to ensuring our forces are well-equipped and prepared to protect Nigerians,” the President said.
The AGUSTA 109 Trekker, known for its agility, advanced avionics, and multi-mission capabilities, is expected to enhance the NAF’s ability to conduct reconnaissance, troop transport, and search and rescue missions. This addition comes at a crucial time as Nigeria continues to confront evolving security challenges such as insurgency, banditry, and cross-border threats.

“Neither economic prosperity nor justice can prevail amidst insecurity. Therefore, the Nigerian Armed Forces must intensify their efforts to defeat the enemies of our collective progress and safeguard the future of our nation,” he stated.
Vice President Shettima, speaking at the ceremony, echoed these sentiments and assured that the federal government would continue to prioritize the welfare of the military personnel, ensuring they have the resources and morale needed to perform their duties effectively.
