US singer Chris Brown has been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, according to the Metropolitan Police. The charge relates to an alleged assault at a nightclub in central London on February 19, 2023. Brown, 36, was arrested at a hotel in Manchester and remains in custody, due to appear before Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Adele Kelly, the deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS London North, said: “We have authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Chris Brown with one count of grievous bodily harm, contrary to section 18 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861.” Kelly added that “criminal proceedings against this defendant are active” and “he has the right to a fair trial.”
Brown is currently on tour, with several UK shows scheduled in June and July. According to reports, he flew into Manchester Airport on a private jet before his arrest. This development comes after previous controversies surrounding the singer, including a lawsuit against Warner Bros over a documentary’s sex assault claims.
The alleged assault took place at TAPE Nightclub in London’s Mayfair district, where Chris Brown reportedly attacked producer Abe Diaw with a bottle. According to reports, Brown arrived at Manchester Airport on a private jet on Wednesday before being arrested at a 5-star hotel in Manchester by the Metropolitan Police.
Brown’s court appearance is scheduled for Friday at Manchester Magistrates’ Court, where he will face charges of grievous bodily harm with intent. The Crown Prosecution Service has reminded the public that “criminal proceedings against this defendant are active” and that Brown “has the right to a fair trial”.
