The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted approval for 21 academic programmes at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), following a rigorous nationwide accreditation exercise aimed at evaluating the quality and standards of academic offerings in Nigerian universities.
The announcement was made by the Vice Chancellor of UNIPORT, Professor Owunari Georgewill, during a press briefing held in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
He described the development as a significant milestone for the university, reflecting its commitment to academic excellence and continuous improvement in higher education delivery.
According to Prof. Georgewill, the university presented 22 academic programmes for assessment during the October/November 2024 accreditation cycle conducted by the NUC.
Out of these, 21 programmes were granted full accreditation, while one received interim accreditation. This, he emphasized, represents a 100 per cent success rate in the university’s accreditation performance, indicating that nearly all programmes met or exceeded the commission’s stringent quality standards.
While the specific programmes that received full accreditation were not disclosed during the briefing, the Vice Chancellor assured that the successful outcome underscores the university’s unwavering dedication to maintaining high academic standards.
He attributed the achievement to the resilience, strategic focus, and collaborative efforts of the university’s management, academic and non-academic staff, and other key stakeholders.
“This outstanding result is not merely a coincidence but the outcome of years of strategic planning, teamwork, and a shared vision among all members of the university community to uphold excellence in teaching, research, and service delivery,” Prof. Georgewill stated.
He went on to commend the contributions of the university’s staff, accreditation committees, and other stakeholders who worked tirelessly to ensure that the institution met the expectations and standards set by the NUC. Their collective efforts, he noted, have played a critical role in the success of the accreditation exercise.
“This achievement reinforces our reputation as a leading institution for higher learning and research in Nigeria. It also reaffirms our commitment to providing quality education that meets both national and international standards,” he added.
Prof. Georgewill concluded by expressing optimism about the future of the university, stating that the successful accreditation would inspire further improvements and innovations across all facets of the university’s academic programmes.
