Commissioner Cautions Against Fake News, Urges Journalists to Embrace Science Communication

The Cross River State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang, has urged media practitioners across Nigeria to exercise caution and responsibility in their reporting, warning against the spread of fake and sensational news capable of inciting violence and threatening democratic values.

Speaking at the inaugural International Conference on Media and Communication Studies held on Wednesday at the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Calabar, Dr. Ekpang emphasized the critical role of scientific communication in promoting societal progress and sustaining democracy.

The conference, organized by the Department of Mass Communication, focused on the theme: “The Science of Communication and the Communication of Science.”

Dr. Ekpang highlighted the growing threat posed by the widespread dissemination of misinformation, blackmail, and sensational reporting. He stressed that the deliberate manipulation of information not only fuels societal discord but also erodes public trust in democratic institutions and scientific discourse.

“In Cross River State, and indeed throughout Nigeria, we have witnessed how unverified reports have sparked conflict, tarnished reputations, and weakened public confidence in institutions and scientific inquiry,” he stated. “The danger lies not just in spreading falsehoods, but also in the silence of those who know the truth yet choose to remain quiet.”

The Commissioner called on journalists to commit to truth-telling and evidence-based reporting, describing science communication as a tool for informed decision-making, public enlightenment, and the advancement of research and innovation.

“I implore you to see the science of communication not only as an academic pursuit but as a moral obligation. Let your reports be rooted in facts and integrity. Reject the allure of clickbait headlines and slanderous content. Be a voice for justice, using your platforms to heal and build society, not tear it apart,” Dr. Ekpang urged.

He encouraged participants to apply insights gained from the conference in promoting accurate, factual, and constructive communication, particularly in the field of science.

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Dr. Emmanuel Inyang, underscored the importance of adapting to technological changes in communication. He challenged media professionals and scholars to harness the power of technology to enhance science communication and shape new directions in media practice.

“This conference offers us a platform to reflect on how technology has transformed communication, and how we can leverage these tools to foster better understanding and innovation,” Inyang noted.

The conference brought together media scholars, practitioners, and students to engage in critical discussions on the evolving role of communication in shaping society and advancing scientific knowledge.
