The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly issued a formal invitation to former Niger Delta militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo—widely known as Tompolo—over allegations of naira abuse and financial impropriety.

According to sources within the anti-corruption agency who spoke with SaharaReporters on Wednesday, the letter was delivered earlier this week, and the EFCC is currently awaiting Tompolo’s response.

The sources emphasized that the invitation is a standard procedural step in the course of an investigation and not an arrest warrant. However, the Commission expects full cooperation from the former militant leader.

“An invitation letter has been sent to Tompolo,” one of the sources confirmed.

This development comes in the wake of widespread public criticism following the circulation of a viral video that appeared to show Tompolo celebrating his 54th birthday in April.

In the video, which garnered significant attention on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Tompolo is seen dancing while another individual sprays him with bundles of ₦1,000 notes.

The EFCC faced mounting public pressure and accusations of selective enforcement in the aftermath of the video’s release.

Critics pointed out that while public figures such as Bobrisky, E-Money, Iyabo Ojo, and comedian AY have recently faced interrogation or prosecution for similar infractions, Tompolo appeared to have been overlooked—until now.

Amid growing backlash, the EFCC released a statement on Monday confirming that Tompolo would be investigated, affirming its commitment to equal application of the law. “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer,” the Commission stated.

As of now, the EFCC has not disclosed further details regarding the scope or timeline of the investigation.
