A fresh graduate of the Niger Delta University (NDU), identified as Abinna Precious Briggs, has been killed in a suspected cult-related attack in Amassoma, Bayelsa State. The tragic incident occurred on the night of Monday, May 13, in the university’s host community.

Briggs, who had just concluded his final examinations and was awaiting his project defense, was reportedly targeted and shot by members of a rival cult group.

According to a community source quoted by Daily Trust, Briggs was rushed to a nearby hospital following the attack. However, he was allegedly denied immediate treatment due to regulatory constraints surrounding gunshot wounds, ultimately leading to his death from excessive blood loss.

This incident is part of a disturbing wave of cult-related violence in the region. In the last two weeks alone, at least ten individuals have lost their lives to ongoing clashes between rival cult groups.

The Bayelsa State Police Command has confirmed the latest killing. Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Muhammad, stated that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Just four days prior to Briggs’ death, IREPORT247NEW reported a devastating incident that occurred in the Gbarantoru community of Yenagoa Local Government Area in Bayelsa State, where two graduates  were hacked to death by suspected cultists.

The victims, one identified as Ayaokpo Sinclair from Tombia community, were brutally attacked around 11 pm on Thursday.

Seventeen suspected cultists were arrested in connection with the killings.

According to police sources, the arrests were made possible by a stop-and-search operation conducted by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) along the Tombia-Amasoma road.

The police received a radio alert about the incident and set up a roadblock. When a Suzuki minibus was stopped, the officers found over 13 individuals inside, some with bloodstains on their clothing and machetes stained with blood.

The suspects allegedly traveled to the crime scene in two minibuses, abandoning one that developed a fault during their escape.

The police believe the suspects are members of the notorious Vikings cult group and that four individuals, known as “yahoo boys,” sponsored the killing.
