Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi underwent emergency abdominal surgery following an injury sustained during a 2-2 Premier League draw against Leicester City on Sunday, according to Mail Sport.
The 27-year-old collided with a goalpost in the final minutes of the match at the City Ground while attempting to connect with a cross from teammate Anthony Elanga. Awoniyi, visibly in pain, received several minutes of on-field treatment but initially continued playing.
However, the severity of the injury was only discovered by Forest’s medical staff on Monday, prompting urgent hospitalization and surgery.
The incident sparked controversy, with Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis reportedly furious over the handling of Awoniyi’s injury by the club’s medical team.
The striker could not be substituted after the collision, as Forest had already used their final substitution window to replace Elliot Anderson with Jota Silva.
Awoniyi’s recovery timeline remains unclear, raising concerns for both club and country.
