Dr. Samuel Kolawole Oredipe, a former middle-distance runner and Vice Chairman of the Bayelsa State Athletics Association, has announced his candidacy for the Zonal Representative position on the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) board in the upcoming elections. The founder of SamKay Athletics Club is seeking the support of South-South stakeholders to advance grassroots athletics development.

Oredipe, who competed in the 800m, 1,500m, and 3,000m steeplechase at the Nigerian University Games in 1997 and 1998, has been a key figure in nurturing young talent in Bayelsa State. Through his club and academy, he has mentored athletes like Tima Seikeseye Godbless, Godwin Tejiri, and 13-year-old Ebimoboere Christopher, who recently won the cadet girls’ 100m and 200m at the MTN Champs/MoC grand finale in Uyo.

A statement released on Monday highlighted Oredipe’s contributions, including donations of athletics equipment and kits to the Bayelsa State Sports Council and his efforts to scout and train young athletes. As a former captain of the Federal University of Technology, Akure’s sports contingent in 1998, Oredipe brings a wealth of experience in sports journalism and administration.

If elected, Oredipe pledges to strengthen grassroots and underage athletics across the South-South region, covering Bayelsa, Rivers, Edo, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River. He aims to secure sustainable corporate sponsorships and leverage his expertise to prepare Nigerian athletes for medal success at the Olympics and international competitions.

“Nigeria is a powerhouse in athletics, and the South-South is its heart. I am here to serve and raise future champions,” Oredipe said.
