Lagos APC Electoral Committee Adopts Consensus Method for Lagos Mainland and Yaba LCDA Chairmanship Candidates
The Electoral Committee of the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced that the party’s candidates for the Lagos Mainland Local Government Area and the Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) will be selected through consensus, rather than through the primary election process initially scheduled.
This decision was made following the inability of the party to reach a conclusive outcome for these two councils during the chairmanship primaries held on Saturday in Ikeja. The primaries were organized to select candidates ahead of the upcoming local government elections scheduled for July 12, 2025, in Lagos State.
During the primaries, the APC successfully produced candidates for 55 out of the 57 local councils in the state, which includes 20 constitutionally recognized Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
These 55 candidates emerged from a competitive pool of about 500 aspirants who had indicated interest in vying for chairmanship positions across the various councils.
The chairman of the Electoral Committee, Mr. Ogala, in a statement to The Punch, explained that the decision to resort to consensus in Lagos Mainland and Yaba was part of a peaceful resolution strategy within the party.
According to him, the consensus approach was adopted after thorough engagement and negotiations with the aspirants, many of whom agreed to withdraw their candidacy voluntarily in the interest of party unity and discipline.
“By the grace of God, we have resolved the issues, and our candidates are emerging by consensus,” Ogala stated. “It will be by consensus of the members, and I can assure you that there will be no protest.”
He further explained the committee’s approach to managing the large number of aspirants, highlighting that dialogue and internal negotiations played a key role. “We engaged, and many people withdrew. We negotiated the exit, and the aspiring party members respected the party, and to help the party, they also made sacrifices,” Ogala said.
The committee also assured party members and the public that the final list of candidates for all 57 local government councils in the state would be made public shortly. As of Sunday evening, Ogala indicated that the full list would be available within hours.
The adoption of consensus candidacy reflects the APC’s internal strategy to maintain party cohesion and avoid post-primary conflicts, which have in the past affected local electoral processes across the country.
