Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has emphasized the crucial role artificial intelligence (AI) will play in driving innovation across various sectors, including health, education, and agriculture. During a meeting with Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta, Gates expressed his optimism about AI’s potential to tackle global challenges.
“AI is going to help us discover new tools. And even in the delivery of health, education, and agriculture advice, we’ll be using AI,” Gates stated. He highlighted the potential of AI in helping to eradicate diseases such as measles and malaria, following the progress made in polio eradication efforts. “Once we finish eradicating polio, we’d like to try to eradicate measles and malaria as well. We have some new tools for that. And of course, part of my optimism about the innovation is because we now have artificial intelligence,” he added.
Collaboration and Investment in AI for Development
Gates’ visit to Indonesia also involved discussions on philanthropic efforts in the country. President Prabowo acknowledged the significant contributions of billionaire philanthropists, who have donated over $159 million to Indonesia since 2009, primarily for health sector initiatives, including vaccine funding. Gates and Prabowo also visited an elementary school in Jakarta, where students were enjoying free meals as part of a program launched by the Indonesian leader.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has been actively investing in AI applications for global health and development, focusing on access and equity. According to Mark Suzman, CEO of the Gates Foundation, “The world needs to make sure that everyone—and not just people who are well-off—benefits from artificial intelligence. Governments and philanthropy will need to play a major role in ensuring that it reduces inequity and doesn’t contribute to it.” The foundation’s guiding principles for AI include adhering to core values, promoting co-design and inclusivity, proceeding responsibly, addressing privacy and security, building for equitable access, and ensuring transparency.
Ensuring Equitable Access to AI Benefits
The Gates Foundation emphasizes the importance of collaboration and responsible AI development to ensure that its benefits are equitably distributed. By prioritizing inclusivity, transparency, and accountability, the foundation aims to harness AI’s potential to improve the lives of vulnerable communities worldwide. As Suzman noted, “Potential gains will only be realized if the technology is implemented with the beneficiaries participating in its development”.
