Why Peter Obi Is Called Agbotikuyo (One who rejoices at bad news) – Reno Omokri

Reno Omokri, a political pundit and former presidential assistant, has criticized Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party. Omokri accused Obi of having a peculiar reaction to events in Nigeria, rejoicing in bad news and remaining silent or depressed when good news emerges.

Omokri believes that Peter Obi’s behavior is aptly described by the term “Agbotikuyo,” which means “One who rejoices at bad news.”

According to Omokri, this label fits Obi’s pattern of reaction to events in Nigeria, where he appears to take pleasure in negative developments and remains subdued when positive news emerges.

Omokri pointed out the contrast in Obi’s reactions to MTN Nigeria’s financial reports in 2024 and 2025. In 2024, Obi was quick to criticize the Tinubu administration, attributing the loss to the President’s economic policies. However, in 2025, Obi remained silent, failing to acknowledge the positive development.

Omokri also highlighted Obi’s silence on Tinubu’s repayment of debts owed to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In contrast, when the government took a loan, Obi was vocal in his criticism of the President.

Omokri wrote, “Last year, when MTN Nigeria declared a loss, Peter Obi made a post on Saturday, February 3, 2024, lambasting the Tinubu administration and accusing President Tinubu of ruining the economy. However, in 2025, MTN, Glo, and Airtel declared record profits. But Peter Obi has remained silent. He has said nothing.

“Do you now see why huge swathes of the public call him Agbotikuyo? That word means ‘One who rejoices at bad news’.

“And that is who Peter Obi is. He is happy when evil occurs in Nigeria and depressed when good happens.

“Okay, President Tinubu has paid up all our debts owed to the International Monetary Fund and racked up by previous governments. Peter Obi said nothing. But when the government took a loan, he excoriated the President.

“You see? Agbotikuyo!”
