Oyo Sends 420-Strong Team to National Sports Festival

Oyo State is set to make a strong showing at the 22nd National Sports Festival, dubbed “Gateway 2025,” with a contingent of 320 athletes, 65 coaches, and 36 officials. The event, scheduled for May 16-30, 2025, in Ogun State, will see Oyo competing in 32 sports, including 27 compulsory and five optional events.

Honourable Wasilat Adegoke, Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, announced the state’s participation during a briefing at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Adamasingba, Ibadan. She revealed that Governor Seyi Makinde has approved a minimum wage of ₦80,000 for athletes, coaches, and sports officers on contract, a move she described as a morale booster for the team. “This act of magnanimity will serve as an impetus for our athletes at the festival and beyond,” Adegoke stated.

The commissioner also promised instant rewards for athletes who win gold, silver, or bronze medals, alongside provisions to ensure their comfort during the festival. She expressed confidence in the team’s preparation, predicting a proud performance for Oyo State.

The Executive Assistant on Sports Development Engr. Akin Akinleye urged athletes to uphold the state’s reputation and avoid actions that could tarnish its image, emphasizing that outstanding performances would be rewarded.

Adegoke further noted that the “Torch of Unity” will be presented to Governor Makinde on May 13 to ahead of the games the festival and to raise public awareness.

The National Sports Festival will feature teams from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with events taking place in Abeokuta, Ijebu Ode, Sagamu, and Ikenne.
