Amnesty International(AI)has strongly condemned the May 8, 2025, attack on travelers in Imo State, Nigeria, which resulted in the deaths of at least 30 people and the destruction of over 20 commuter vehicles and trucks. The human rights organization alleges that the attack was carried out by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Details of the Attack

The attack occurred along the Okigwe-Owerri Road, with gunmen blocking the highway and unleashing violence in an “utter show of impunity”. According to Amnesty International, the incident demonstrates a “callous disregard for the syanctity of life”. The Nigerian authorities have been urged to conduct a transparent and thorough investigation into the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Amnesty International’s Call to Action

“The Nigerian authorities must immediately and transparently investigate this attack and ensure that the actual perpetrators are brought to justice. International law requires the Nigerian government to promptly investigate unlawful killings with a view to bringing perpetrators to justice,” Amnesty International stated.

IPOB’s Response

However, IPOB has denied involvement in the attack. Kanuta Kanu, the brother of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, slammed Amnesty International for linking the secessionist group to the incident, describing it as “rubbish unverified fake news”. He further accused Amnesty International of being cowardly and lacking morality and ethics.

Investigation and Aftermath

The Imo State police have confirmed the attack and reported that one suspected IPOB/ESN member was killed in a shootout with security agents. A manhunt has been launched for the rest of the gunmen, and security operatives are combing nearby forests and surrounding areas where the suspects are believed to be hiding. The police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station.
