The Russia-Ukraine conflict has seen a significant escalation in tensions, with both sides exchanging accusations and attacks. Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a three-day ceasefire to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, but Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described it as a “farce,” stating that “Russian forces continue to attack across the entire front line.” According to the Ukrainian military,
Russia committed 734 ceasefire violations and 63 assault operations in the first 24 hours of the ceasefire. The Ukrainian military reported 154 clashes, 15 air strikes, and one missile attack during the same period.
The international community has reacted to the escalating conflict, with US President Donald Trump calling for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire in a post on Truth Social, following a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy described the call as “good,” marking an improvement in their relationship since a previous meeting. Trump’s call for a ceasefire comes as Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Putin in Moscow, stating that the war in Ukraine could only be solved by addressing its “root causes” or Ukraine’s desire to join NATO.
The United Kingdom has also taken action, announcing plans to sanction up to 100 oil tankers suspected of being part of Russia’s “shadow fleet,” used to evade international sanctions. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the UK will “do everything in our power to destroy [Russia’s] shadow fleet operation” to “starve” the Russian “war machine of oil revenues.”
The conflict continues to escalate, with both sides suffering losses. The international community remains divided on how to address the situation, with some calling for a ceasefire and others supporting Ukraine’s right to self-defense. The situation remains fluid, with developments unfolding rapidly.
