The Nigeria-Britain Association (N-BA) has renewed its commitment to enhancing bilateral relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, with a focus on mutual growth and cultural exchange. The announcement was made at the Association’s 56th Annual General Meeting (AGM), which took place recently in Lagos, where members from both nations gathered to review the year’s accomplishments and set the stage for future engagements.
At the AGM, Sola Oyetayo, the President of the N-BA, took the floor to highlight the Association’s achievements over the past year. He praised the success of several key events, including the vibrant celebration of Nigeria’s Independence Day in London, the prestigious Presidential Cocktail, and the impactful Akintola Williams Youth Debate Competition. The Annual Lecture Series also saw an impressive turnout, further solidifying the Association’s role in fostering dialogue and collaboration between both countries.
Oyetayo also took a moment to honor the legacy of the late Akintola Williams, the N-BA’s former patron. Describing him as a significant figure whose contributions shaped the growth and credibility of the Association, Oyetayo announced the appointment of Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Commonwealth Secretary-General, as the new Patron. Dr. Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, was also named Vice Patron, alongside other prominent figures such as Chief Olabintan Famutimi and Philip Hall OBE, who were recognized for their unwavering support.
A major highlight of the AGM was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the British Council. This partnership is designed to enhance opportunities for members, particularly through access to programs, events, and internships for winners of the Akintola Williams Youth Debate Competition. This collaboration reflects the N-BA’s commitment to providing valuable experiences for young Nigerians and UK citizens alike.
Additionally, a new partnership was formed with ORÍKÌ, a leading beauty and wellness brand, offering exclusive discounts to fully subscribed N-BA members. This collaboration reflects the Association’s vision of promoting diverse and sustainable business opportunities for its members.
Tobi Asehinde, the Honorary Secretary of the N-BA, gave an overview of the association’s activities, pointing to an impressive surge in membership. Asehinde highlighted the growing involvement of young professionals, particularly in youth mentorship initiatives, sustainability-focused forums, and collaborative efforts with UK-based organizations. This shift towards greater youth engagement signals a fresh, vibrant energy within the Association and strengthens its mission of fostering lasting relationships between Nigeria and the UK.
The AGM also witnessed the re-election of key officers, including Oyetayo, who was once again entrusted with the role of President. Tobi Asehinde was re-elected as Honorary Secretary, while Gboyega Olanbiwoninu took up the post of Assistant Honorary Secretary. Gafar Odubote was named the new Honorary Treasurer, marking a new chapter for the N-BA as it continues its work in building stronger Nigeria-UK ties.
A Vision for the Future
In his acceptance speech, Oyetayo reaffirmed his commitment to driving the goals of “The Big I.D.E.A.” – Inclusivity, Diversity, Empowerment, and Agility. He emphasized the importance of building on the N-BA’s legacy of cultural exchange and mutual development, reinforcing the association’s dedication to bridging the gap between Nigeria and the UK through strategic initiatives.
“We are excited about the future of the Nigeria-Britain Association. Our focus is on enhancing Nigeria-UK relations through friendship, collaboration, and developmental opportunities that benefit both nations,” Oyetayo remarked.
As the N-BA moves into the next phase, it remains committed to being a pivotal force in strengthening ties between Nigeria and the UK, providing a platform for business, education, and cultural exchange. With renewed leadership, fresh partnerships, and a clear vision for the future, the association is poised to play a key role in fostering deeper connections between the two countries.
