FIFA announced Friday that the Women’s World Cup will expand to 48 teams in 2031, aligning with the men’s tournament format.

The United States is expected to host the 104-game event, with formal confirmation anticipated next year.

The expansion follows FIFA’s goal to grow the women’s game, matching the 48-team men’s World Cup set for 2026, co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino revealed last month that the U.S. is the sole bidder for 2031, while the United Kingdom is the only candidate for 2035. Brazil will host a 32-team Women’s World Cup in 2027.

FIFA stated the larger tournament will enhance global representation, providing more nations and players access to top-tier competition and boosting investment in women’s football.

The Women’s World Cup has grown steadily, from 16 teams in 2011 to 24 teams in 2015 and 2019, and 32 teams in 2023, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
