Five Siblings Die from Suspected Food Poisoning

A heartbreaking tragedy has occurred in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, resulting in the deaths of five siblings from suspected food poisoning. The incident, which took place on Saturday, May 3, has plunged the family and the entire community into mourning.

According to Pa Robinson Aghalu, the 79-year-old father of the deceased children and a retired soldier, the tragedy began shortly after the children consumed a meal prepared by their mother. The children soon started experiencing severe symptoms, including stomach aches and vomiting, which rapidly worsened over time.

Despite the efforts of their family to save them, the children’s condition continued to deteriorate, prompting a frantic rush to various hospitals in the area. Tragically, five of the six children died at different medical facilities, including a nearby maternity clinic, Iyienu Mission Hospital, and Crown Hospital.

The mother, who also fell ill with similar symptoms after preparing the meal, is currently hospitalized in critical condition. A doctor who managed her case has confirmed that the likely cause of her illness, and the deaths of the children, is food poisoning.

The loss of the five siblings is a devastating blow to the family, and the incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with relatives and neighbors gathering to console the bereaved family.

Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga said, “The command is aware of this development and has taken over the crime scene.

“The samples of food have been taken for a forensic assessment, and operatives are also engaging the neighbourhood for necessary information that will aid the investigations.

“Meanwhile, the bodies of the children have been recovered and deposited in a morgue.

“Further development shall be communicated, please.”
