President Bola Tinubu did not remove the fuel subsidy but merely announced it, implying that former President Muhammadu Buhari had already removed the subsidy.

Senator Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South Senatorial District, has made a statement that President Bola Tinubu did not remove the fuel subsidy but merely announced it, implying that former President Muhammadu Buhari had already removed the subsidy.

Kawu Sumaila is a seasoned politician with extensive experience in Nigerian politics. He served as a member of the House of Representatives for three terms, acted as the Deputy Minority Leader, and worked as a Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly matters.

Senator Kawu Sumaila shared his perspective on the fuel subsidy issue during an appearance on Channels TV. According to him, President Bola Tinubu’s role in the subsidy removal was more about announcing the policy rather than initiating it.

President Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidy on May 29, 2023, in his inauguration speech, famously declaring “subsidy is gone”.

The removal of fuel subsidy has been a recurring theme in Nigerian politics, with different administrations approaching it in various ways.

President Tinubu’s announcement of subsidy removal has sparked debate, with some arguing it’s a necessary economic reform and others criticizing its potential impact on the poor.

This move was expected to reset the economy and prevent the country from going bankrupt, as Tinubu explained.

The announcement led to increased commodity prices, causing hardship for many Nigerians. Critics argue that the policy wasn’t well thought out, while supporters believe it’s a necessary economic reform
