The Federal High Court in Abuja played a video recording of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), issuing directives that the prosecution claims incited acts of terrorism in the South-East region of Nigeria. Justice James Omotoso presided over the trial.

The video, contained in a flash drive admitted as Exhibit PWA, showed Kanu addressing his followers, announcing the formation of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and urging them to defend their land against perceived “Fulani domination.” He also warned political leaders against compromises and forbade the presence of Fulani herdsmen in the region.

A witness from the Department of State Services (DSS), identified as BBB, testified that Kanu’s statements led to violent destruction in the region.

The witness alleged that Kanu’s broadcasts were followed by coordinated attacks on police stations and correctional facilities, resulting in loss of lives and property.

The court also admitted a letter dated June 17, 2021, authored by the former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), accusing Kanu of terrorism, murder, and incitement to violence. The letter was marked as Exhibit PWF.

A statement purportedly made by Kanu during his detention, where he declined to make further written statements, was also admitted as evidence.

The prosecution, led by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, presented the evidence, while the defense raised objections. The court ultimately admitted the evidence, marking it as exhibits. The trial continues to unfold, with the prosecution presenting its case against Nnamdi Kanu.
