With the APC now holding 18 seats, the party’s dominance in the assembly has been reinforced. Conversely, the PDP is left with just six seats, weakening its position in the state.
A significant development has taken place in Edo State politics, as a major wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has occurred.
The National Chairman of the APC, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, welcomed the defectors, marking a crucial milestone in the party’s efforts to consolidate its position in the state.
The defection event, held in Benin, saw several prominent PDP members join the APC. These include:
Blessing Agbebaku: The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly
Sunny Ifada: A PDP lawmaker representing Esan Central Constituency
Yekini Idaiye: A PDP lawmaker representing Akoko Edo I Constituency
Roland Asoro: Former Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly
Nosa Nosayaba: Former House Majority Leader
Gabriel Oloruntoba: Former PDP State Secretary
Additionally, councillors from 17 local government areas also defected to the APC, further strengthening the party’s presence in the state.
The defection has significantly altered the balance of power in the 24-member Edo State House of Assembly. With the APC now holding 18 seats, the party’s dominance in the assembly has been reinforced. Conversely, the PDP is left with just six seats, weakening its position in the state.
The APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Bashiru, received the defectors on behalf of Dr. Ganduje. He described the event as a “milestone in the party’s consolidation efforts” in Edo State, emphasizing the party’s growing confidence and strength in the region.
Bashiru said, “This wave of defections is not just political realignment, it’s a validation of the governor’s achievements and a sign that Edo people want results.”
Bashiru assured the new members of equal treatment within the party, highlighting the APC’s commitment to inclusivity and unity.
Speaking at the event, Governor Okpebholo said, “From roads to flyovers, education, youth employment, and agriculture, we are investing massively to ensure food security and economic stability.
“We will lead the South-South in supporting Mr. President. We have the structure and the momentum, and we will launch this mission from Edo State.”
The mass defection from the PDP to the APC in Edo State is a significant development that underscores the APC’s growing influence in the region.
As the APC continues to consolidate its position, the PDP will need to reassess its strategy to regain ground in the state. The implications of this defection will likely be felt in the state’s politics for some time to come.
