The ADC is calling on all Nigerians to rise up and reclaim their country
As the 2027 general elections approach, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is urging Nigerians to unite in a coalition to protect the nation’s democracy and revitalize its electoral process.
The call was made by Rwang Pam Jnr, Director-General of the ADC’s Directorate for Mobilisation, Civil Societies and Progressives Engagements, and Chairman of the Coalition to Protect and Defend Our Democracy (COPDEM).
Pam expressed deep concern over the current state of Nigeria’s democracy, describing it as “alarming.” He noted that mass defections to the ruling party have undermined the nation’s multiparty democracy, and electoral outcomes are increasingly determined by coercion and judicial compromise. Insecurity continues to ravage communities with little consequence for those in power.
Pam lamented that the opposition parties, including the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), have failed to serve as effective checks on power. Instead of being credible opposition, they have become fragmented, distracted, and reactive.
The ADC is calling on all Nigerians to rise up and reclaim their country. Pam emphasized that the soul of Nigeria’s democracy is under siege and that unless Nigerians unite to reclaim it, they may soon find themselves in an irreversible state of tyranny.
The ADC’s call to action highlights several key issues, including:
– The erosion of multiparty democracy
– Electoral coercion and judicial compromise
– Insecurity and lack of accountability
– The transformation of Nigeria into a one-party state
– The need for credible opposition and institutional accountability
The ADC’s initiative has significant implications for Nigeria’s democracy. If successful, it could lead to a more vibrant and inclusive electoral process, greater accountability, and a more effective check on power. However, the challenge ahead is substantial, and the ADC will need to mobilize widespread support to achieve its goals.
