This ambitious project aims to link the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, significantly improving road connectivity in the state.
The Federal Government has announced plans to construct an underwater tunnel in Lagos, connecting Ahmadu Bello Way in Victoria Island to Snake Island.
This ambitious project aims to link the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, significantly improving road connectivity in the state.
According to Minister of Works, David Umahi, the tunnel is part of the government’s efforts to enhance traffic flow and ease movement between major highways in Lagos.
During an interview on Arise News, Umahi explained that the tunnel will enable vehicles to travel from central Lagos through the lagoon to Snake Island and then to Badagry, before connecting to the larger highway leading to Sokoto.
The construction of the underwater tunnel is expected to have numerous benefits for the region. Some of the anticipated advantages include:
- Improved Road Connectivity: The tunnel will provide a seamless connection between major highways, reducing travel time and congestion.
- Boost to Economic Activities: By opening up new routes for trade and transportation, the tunnel is expected to boost economic activities in the region.
- Enhanced Movement of Goods and People: The project aims to make it easier for people and goods to move around, promoting economic growth and development.
Overall, the Lagos underwater tunnel project is a significant infrastructure development initiative that promises to transform the state’s transportation landscape and drive economic growth.
According to Umahi, who shared updates on the 750-kilometer Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, the first phase of the project, which commenced in March 2024, spans 47.47 kilometers.
The first phase is designed as a six-lane expressway, with provisions for a future railway. This forward-thinking design aims to accommodate the growing needs of the region’s transportation infrastructure.
Umahi assured that the completed highway is designed to withstand flooding for approximately 50 years, ensuring durability and minimal disruptions to traffic flow.
