President Bola Tinubu held a meeting with Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.

This meeting marked the governor’s first encounter with President Tinubu since his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on April 23, 2025.

Governor Oborevwori’s defection was a significant blow to the PDP, making him the first incumbent governor of Delta State to leave the party since 1999.

His predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, who was the PDP’s vice presidential candidate in the 2023 election, also defected to the APC along with the deputy governor, commissioners, and local government chairmen.

Also, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, and 21 lawmakers has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday.

During a plenary session, Guwor announced the receipt of letters from the lawmakers declaring their intention to leave the PDP, followed by his own announcement.

The decision to defect was reportedly unanimous, driven by unresolved divisions within the PDP’s South-South Zonal Executive and the escalating crisis at the national level.

The APC is reportedly expecting more high-profile defections, with governors from Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Kano, and Rivers State rumored to be joining the party.

These potential defections could further strengthen the APC’s position and exacerbate the internal crises faced by the PDP, Labour Party, and New Nigeria Peoples Party.
