The Yoruba Union, also known as Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, hailing him as a compassionate elder statesman who embodied integrity, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to the Yoruba cause.

Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the late leader of the Pan-Yoruba sociopolitical organization Afenifere, a distinguished lawyer, former organizing secretary of the Action Group (AG), and chieftain of the defunct National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), died at the age of 96 peacefully on February 14 at his home in Lekki, Lagos State.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the union’s convener, Olusola Oluwaseyi Badero, the organization expressed profound sorrow over Adebanjo’s passing, while commending his tireless advocacy for true federalism, national restructuring, and social justice.

The union described Chief Adebanjo as an elder marked by compassion, self-worth, and selflessness, whose lifelong dedication to promoting Yoruba interests and national progress made him a paragon of true leadership.

They praised him as “a true Omoluabi” whose legacy would continue to inspire generations. The Yoruba Union’s tribute underscores the significant impact Pa Ayo Adebanjo had on the Yoruba community and the nation at large, solidifying his place as a revered figure in the pursuit of justice and unity.

The statement reads, “In an era where the older generation is often indifferent to the future of the youth, Pa Adebanjo stood tall. He lived an emulatable life of service and sacrifice. In these perilous times, he left his footprints in the sands of time. A true Omoluabi.

“Baba, throughout his life, defended the rights of the people and was committed to the interest of the Yoruba race. He sustained the legacy of Chief Obafemi Awolowo by consistently advocating for the restructuring of Nigeria and the adoption of a true federal system of government.

“He was an elder statesman who stood against corruption and nepotism, and consistently pushed for a just and equitable Nigeria.

“He lived an emulatable life of service and sacrifice. At a time when seeing elders with compassion and courage is increasingly rare, Baba Adebanjo shone brightly. His memory will forever be a beacon for those who believe in justice and equity.

“His selfless service to the Yoruba people and the Nigerian nation at large will forever be remembered. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
