Disregard for traffic safety protocols endangers not only the individual but also the broader public
A tragic road accident occurred on the Ojota Expressway over the weekend, resulting in the death of a pedestrian who was struck by a lorry while attempting to cross the highway improperly.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the victim had chosen to cross the busy road directly instead of using the designated pedestrian bridge.
Following the collision, the lorry driver lost control of the vehicle while trying to flee the scene and crashed into a Toyota Corolla.
LASTMA has since issued a stern warning against the dangers of unlawfully crossing highways, emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety measures to prevent such accidents.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki said, “The Lagos State Government has invested significantly in pedestrian bridges, and it is incumbent upon all road users to utilise them conscientiously.
LASTMA officers quickly apprehended the lorry driver who attempted to flee the scene after the fatal accident and handed him over to the Ogudu Police Division for further investigation, along with the vehicle involved.
The body of the deceased was subsequently turned over to officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, following standard protocols.
Describing the incident as “tragic and wholly preventable,” the LASTMA official expressed condolences to the victim’s family and emphasized the importance of utilizing designated pedestrian infrastructure.
The official stressed that ignoring these safety provisions is both reckless and unlawful, putting not only the individual but also other road users at risk.
The public was urged to prioritize safety and adhere to traffic protocols to prevent further tragedies, with a call for collective vigilance and compliance with safety measures.
