INEC Under Pressure to Decline TNN Registration

There is no doubt that INEC is under tremendous pressure, from both the card-carrying APC members of the Commission and their collaborators, who are mortally afraid of the TNN, and who will want the electoral body to commence, right now, the process of rigging the 2027 election in their favour.

Team New Nigeria (TNN) has expressed concerns that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is being pressured by influential figures to delay its registration as a political party.

According to Dr. Mohammed Adah Shaibu, TNN’s spokesperson, the group submitted its application for registration in 2024 and received confirmation from INEC on May 27, 2024.

However, despite the 90-day deadline outlined in INEC’s guidelines, the commission has neither opened the registration portal nor provided a formal response.

TNN views this delay as unusual and suspects external interference is at play.

Adah Shaibu expressed deep frustration over the ongoing delay in the group’s registration as a political party. He questioned the prolonged wait for official recognition, emphasizing that TNN’s nationwide presence demands ample time to effectively communicate its manifesto to the electorate.

He stressed the importance of timely registration to allow the party to engage with voters and outline its vision for the country.

Shaibu further alleged that INEC Chairman Professor Yakubu Mahmoud is resisting external pressure aimed at blocking TNN’s registration.

This claim has intensified concerns about potential political interference in INEC’s processes. According to Shaibu, the delay raises suspicions that certain influential figures are exerting pressure on INEC to hinder TNN’s registration for undisclosed reasons. Such allegations underscore the need for transparency and impartiality in the electoral body’s decision-making processes.

Shaibu said, “There is no doubt that INEC is under tremendous pressure, from both the card-carrying APC members of the Commission and their collaborators, who are mortally afraid of the TNN, and who will want the electoral body to commence, right now, the process of rigging the 2027 election in their favour.

“But we urge INEC not to compromise its neutrality and integrity by acting contrary to the law. We remind the Commission that Nigerians are keenly watching how it will handle this TNN issue, and whatever it does will determine whether or not Nigerians can count on it to organise free, fair and credible elections in 2027, the statement said.

“Given the already overheated polity ahead of the 2027 elections, we believe INEC will not do anything that will aggravate the situation.”
