In a significant move aimed at transforming the healthcare landscape in Nigeria, Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti has unveiled plans for a $1.3 billion medical city. This ambitious project is expected to not only provide state-of-the-art healthcare infrastructure but also reduce Nigeria’s growing reliance on foreign medical tourism. With the soaring cost of healthcare travel abroad, the medical city offers a promising solution to alleviate transportation and treatment costs for Nigerians seeking quality healthcare.

Governor Otti made the announcement on Wednesday during the April edition of the ‘Meet the People’ forum, a monthly engagement initiative that allows citizens to interact directly with their leaders. The governor highlighted that the construction of the medical city would be a major game-changer for healthcare in the state and the nation at large.

The project is set to be inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu during his visit to Abia before May 29, 2025. Governor Otti emphasized that the medical city would be pivotal in curbing the outflow of billions of dollars currently spent on medical tourism, benefiting not only residents of Abia but also Nigerians from across the country.

The medical city will feature world-class healthcare facilities, making it a beacon for advanced medical care in Nigeria. The initiative comes at a time when the country’s healthcare system faces significant challenges, with many Nigerians seeking treatment abroad due to the lack of specialized medical services locally. Governor Otti’s plan aims to reverse this trend by providing access to cutting-edge healthcare right within the country.

According to the governor, “The Abia Medical City will save billions of dollars in medical tourism and transport costs. It’s a game-changer for healthcare, not just in Abia but across Nigeria.” He noted that the new facility would not only reduce costs but also improve access to healthcare for Nigerians who would otherwise struggle to afford foreign treatment.

Alongside the medical city, Governor Otti revealed that the newly constructed Port Harcourt Road in Aba would also be inaugurated during the same visit by President Tinubu. This road project, alongside the medical city, is expected to boost infrastructure in the region, further enhancing the state’s attractiveness as an investment destination.

Governor Otti reiterated that his administration was committed to improving various sectors within the state. In education, he disclosed that 7,000 children are currently benefiting from the state’s free education programme, supported by the recent hiring of 9,000 teachers. These educators are undergoing phased training to ensure that teaching standards meet the demands of a rapidly evolving education system. “We are paying attention to mathematics, engineering, and science to prepare students for a technology-driven future,” said Otti, underscoring the focus on STEM education.

In healthcare, the governor revealed plans to recruit 777 additional health workers, strengthening the state’s primary healthcare delivery system. This is part of his broader effort to ensure that healthcare services reach all corners of the state, particularly rural areas where access to medical facilities remains a challenge.

Governor Otti also spoke candidly about Abia’s financial status, revealing that his administration inherited a debt of N138 billion. However, since taking office, the state government has made significant strides in reducing this debt, repaying N72 billion, with the remaining balance now at N66 billion. The governor assured the people that despite the financial constraints, his administration remains focused on prudent management of resources to ensure effective service delivery.

On security, Governor Otti reassured residents that his administration would continue to prioritize safety and security. He lauded the efforts of security agencies in maintaining peace and vowed to deal decisively with anyone attempting to disturb the peace in the state. Regarding the anti-grazing law, Otti mentioned that while the law would be reviewed, Abia had already moved beyond the challenges of cattle damaging farmlands.

Governor Otti’s unveiling of the $1.3 billion medical city is a testament to his commitment to driving sustainable development in Abia. With significant investments in healthcare, education, and infrastructure, the state is poised to become a model for progress in Nigeria. As the project progresses, the governor’s vision for transforming Abia into a hub for healthcare excellence, education, and economic growth becomes clearer. The upcoming inauguration of the medical city and other development projects signifies a new chapter in the state’s growth trajectory, promising a brighter future for its citizens.
