In a landmark achievement for Nigerian sports, the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation (NAWF) has secured approval from the National Sports Commission to showcase armwrestling as a demonstration sport at the 22nd National Sports Festival, dubbed “Gateway Games Ogun 2024.”

The announcement was confirmed by Mrs. Thecla Opara, Director of the National Sports Festival and Para Sports and Secretary of the Main Organizing Committee, who revealed that armwrestling has been granted a coveted demonstration slot at the prestigious multi-sport event.

This milestone highlights the remarkable rise of armwrestling, now Nigeria’s third most popular sport in 2024, largely due to its medal-winning performance at the African Games in Ghana.

Expressing his gratitude, Engr. Jackson said, “We are deeply honored by the National Sports Commission’s recognition of armwrestling’s potential.

The demonstration will mark armwrestling’s first appearance at a national multi-sport event, offering spectators and athletes a chance to witness the sport’s intensity and skill.

This historic debut is expected to boost armwrestling’s visibility and cement its place in Nigeria’s sporting landscape.

The National Sports Festival is set to take place from May 16 to 30 in Abeokuta.
