Chief Tonobok Okowa, incumbent president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), announced his bid for re-election ahead of the May 31 vote in Asaba, Delta State.

Speaking in Agbor, Okowa emphasized consolidating gains made during his tenure, including the ‘Get Our Athletes in School’ program, which has secured scholarships for Nigerian athletes in U.S. colleges.

Okowa, also president of the Confederation of African Athletics Zone II, credited AFN’s success to Performance Director Victor Okorie and Technical Director Samuel Onikeku, who have driven policies and prepared athletes for events like the World Athletics Relays and African Championships.

He highlighted Nigeria’s strong performances at the World Youth Championship, African Games, and Commonwealth Games, despite funding challenges.

Facing four challengers, Okowa welcomed the competition, urging delegates to consider candidates’ contributions to athletics.

He pointed to the well-attended AFN Congress in Yenagoa as evidence of his widespread support. “We have laid a solid foundation and will continue to elevate Nigerian athletics,” Okowa said, confident of victory.
