The governor of Osun, Ademola Adeleke, has announced that he has given his approval to a bond in the amount of N4 billion for the purpose of paying pensioners who are participating in the contributory pension program in the state.
This information was disclosed by the governor during his address that he delivered on Thursday at the Workers’ Day celebration that was held at Fakunle High School in Osogbo.
In his explanation, he stated that the bond was intended for pensioners working for county and state governments.
Adeleke said, I have just approved, through the Office of the Head of Service, the payment of bond for retirees under the contributory pension scheme worth over N4 billion.
“Civil service parastatal, secondary schools, tertiary institutions, Uniosun Teaching Hospital retirees will get N2,175,280,322.54 while N2,098,466,528.87 will be given to local governments and primary schools retirees.
“As a sub national government, we have been collaborating with the Federal Government to ease the burden of economic hardship.
“As a matter of policy, we have gone out of our ways to ensure the success of federal government’s efforts.
“We back the centre to reform the national economy and ease the burden on our people.
“At the state level, our government is repositioning the state economy to service the people. We are managing state resources in various ways that no sector is left behind.
“While we are not borrowing to fund governance, we have reduced the inherited state debt by over 40 per cent. The Debt Management Office confirmed this much in its recent reports.”
According to Adeleke, his administration is working to revive the economy of the state for the benefit of the people.
The Chairman of the Osun Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Christopher Arapasopo, expressed his gratitude to the governor for his administration that was free of racial tension and was friendly to workers.
He praised the governor for a number of things, including the payment of salary arrears that were owed by the previous administration, the approval and payment of promotion areas for workers, and the payment of N75,000 as the new minimum wage.
Arapasopo made a request for the provision of housing and vehicle refurbishment loans to workers, as well as for the enhancement of worker training and retraining, and for the recruitment of additional individuals into the civil service.
He stated that the theme for Workers Day in 2025, which was “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship,” was selected as a rallying point for advocacy.
