Governor Sheriff Oborevwori assumes the position of the leader of APC Party in Delta State.
The governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, has been appointed as the new leader of the All Progressives Congress APC.
Valentine Onojeghuo, the state Publicity Secretary for the All Progressives Congress (APC), issued a statement on Wednesday stating that Oborevwori’s ascension to the position of leader is in accordance with the party’s history, which states that a sitting governor is elevated to the position of party leader in their state.
The party claimed that the governor’s new position was affirmed by Vice President Kashim Shettima’s words at the defection ceremony. Additionally, the statement warned that the party will not tolerate any internal opposition that seeks to undermine the governor’s position.
It reads, “We wish to categorically state that with his entry into the APC, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori assumes the position of the leader of the Party in Delta State. This position is not subject to debate or contention.
“Delta APC finds it strange, arrogant and reprehensible for any individual to continue to arrogate or to parade himself as the leader of the Party in Delta State in clear opposition to the present reality.
“Anyone who seeks to undermine this position… will face severe sanctions from the party.
“Delta APC is solidly behind His Excellency as our leader, and we recognise no other individual in that role.”
This appointment follows after Sheriff Oborevwori officially announced his resignation on Wednesday, April 23 from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), which is currently dominating the political landscape.
Following a meeting that took place behind closed doors at the Government House in Asaba on Wednesday, the statement was later made.
The decision was made following “wide consultations with political stakeholders and in the interest of Delta’s long-term development,” according to Sir Festus Ahon, the Deputy Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, who confirmed the move through a phone conversation.
