In a strategic move to strengthen ethical conduct, enhance investigative techniques, and embrace digital-age policing, the Kano State Police Command has commenced a comprehensive capacity-building training programme for its Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers. This initiative, launched on April 29, 2025, aligns with the broader reform agenda of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, aimed at modernising policing across Nigeria.

The training, which took place at the State CID Headquarters in Kano, brought together top police professionals and digital security experts to share insights on tackling systemic corruption, unethical practices, and cyber-related crimes. It underscores the Nigerian Police Force’s commitment to equipping officers with the tools and skills required to respond to contemporary security challenges with efficiency and integrity.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, expressed appreciation for the quality of resource persons selected for the training. He emphasized that the exercise was not only a refresher course but a crucial step in preparing the force for the complexities of 21st-century law enforcement.

“This programme reflects our collective resolve to reform and reposition the Nigerian Police Force for better service delivery. The officers must see this as an opportunity to improve themselves professionally and personally,” CP Bakori said.

Among the presentations delivered were:

“Eliminating Corruption in the Nigeria Police Force” by Assistant Commissioner of Police, CID, ACP Muhammad Wada Jarma.

“Extortion and Other Unethical Conduct” by ACP Mohammed B. Suleiman of the X-Squad.

“Cybersecurity Awareness” presented by Mr. Jessy John of the Cyber-Safe Youth Initiative Organization.

Each session addressed critical areas affecting the force, including the dangers of corrupt practices, how to spot and avoid extortion, and best practices for cybersecurity in the digital era.

In recognition of his commitment to promoting digital safety and reforming the police culture, CP Bakori was honoured with an award by the Cyber-Safe Youth Initiative. The CP humbly dedicated the accolade to the men and women of the Command, noting that their relentless dedication continues to push the boundaries of community-focused policing.

“This award will spur us to keep confronting emerging threats, especially in cyberspace, and protect citizens both physically and digitally. We must continue to evolve as criminals evolve,” he stated.

The Commissioner also revealed that such training initiatives would be replicated across other departments and zones within the state to ensure that every officer benefits from the evolving knowledge base and standard operating procedures in modern policing.

The Kano State Police Command believes this renewed focus on capacity development, ethical conduct, and cybersecurity is a major step toward rebuilding public trust, fostering transparency, and enhancing the rule of law. It also reflects the national shift towards intelligence-led policing and technological integration in law enforcement.

With increasing cases of cyber fraud, financial crimes, and misconduct tarnishing the image of security agencies, experts have lauded the Kano initiative as a model for other states. As Nigeria embraces digital transformation, there is growing consensus that law enforcement must evolve to match the pace of change.

The police command reiterated its commitment to periodic trainings, inter-agency collaboration, and the integration of community policing models to enhance public safety and crime prevention efforts across the region.
