Team Nigeria Shines at 2025 African Senior Weightlifting Championship

Team Nigeria delivered a stellar performance at the 2025 African Senior Weightlifting Championship, securing 18 medals—13 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze—while earning the prestigious title of Best Female Team. Onome Didih was named the championship’s Best Women’s Lifter for her dominant performance in the 55kg category.

The Nigerian contingent showcased their prowess, with standout performances from Sarah Ovayioza (76kg), Ruth Imoleayo Ayodele (64kg), Onome Omolola Didih (55kg), and Rafiatu Folashade Lawal (59kg), each claiming three gold medals in their respective categories.

On the men’s side, Umoafia Joseph Edidiong and Tuesday Emmanuel added to the medal tally with impressive displays.

National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko hailed the athletes’ dedication, calling their success a “resounding victory for the nation.” He emphasized Nigeria’s potential to dominate international sports with continued support, urging the team to prepare for upcoming global events like the World Championships and Commonwealth Games.

NSC Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade praised the athletes for lifting the nation’s spirit, fulfilling his pre-championship promise of rewards. “You have made us proud and shown the world that Nigeria is a force in weightlifting,” he said, encouraging them to maintain their fighting spirit.

In addition to monetary incentives, four athletes have been elevated to Category A elite status, qualifying for $20,000 training grants to prepare for major competitions, including the Olympics.

The NSC reaffirmed its commitment to empowering athletes to ensure Nigeria’s continued success on the global stage.
