Manchester United has reportedly shelved plans to sign Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen due to the English Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). According to transfer expert David Ornstein, the club’s main focus for the striker position is Liam Delap of Ipswich Town, with a £30m release clause if Ipswich are relegated.
Osimhen, currently on loan from Napoli at Galatasaray, has been in fine form, scoring 30 goals and seven assists in 35 games across all competitions this season. Despite reports of Manchester United’s interest, Ornstein stated, “If Manchester United are to look at others, I’m assured it will not be Victor Osimhen. Despite reports you might be reading, he is not on the agenda for Manchester United.”
The club’s priority is to sign Matheus Cunha of Wolverhampton Wanderers, with a £62.5m release clause. Ornstein added, “Their main focus for the No.10 position is Matheus Cunha of Wolverhampton Wanderers… He wants to come, but personal terms would still need to be agreed, which is not a formality.”
Manchester United’s decision to shelve Osimhen’s transfer plans is likely due to the PSR, which permits clubs to lose no more than £105m in a three-year cycle. The club may need to reduce their wage bill to afford a player like Osimhen, who reportedly has high wage demands.
This development raises questions about Osimhen’s future, with the striker’s impressive form at Galatasaray likely to attract attention from other top clubs. Osimhen’s performance has been a key factor in Galatasaray’s success this season, and it remains to be seen whether he will continue to shine in the summer.
The transfer market is heating up, and Manchester United’s priorities may shift depending on various factors, including player availability and team needs. With the club’s focus on Matheus Cunha and Liam Delap, it seems Osimhen is no longer a priority.
