In an unprecedented event, the second half of the Premier League match between Tottenham and Nottingham Forest commenced without the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology due to a fire alarm at Stockley Park, where the VAR hub is located. The Premier League confirmed the interruption via a social media post, stating: “The match will be operating without VAR until further notice due to a fire alarm at the VAR Hub at Stockley Park.”
Within five minutes, however, those within Stockley Park had resumed their positions, and normal service was restored. A follow-up post confirmed: “VAR is now back up and running.” Fortunately, there were no major incidents requiring review during this brief outage.
Earlier Use of VAR Technology
Before the interruption, VAR played a crucial role in determining the course of play. Chris Wood’s strike for Nottingham Forest was subjected to scrutiny by semi-automated technology, which confirmed his offside position, leading to the disallowance of the goal.
Impact on Match Outcome
Despite the technological hiccups, Nottingham Forest secured a significant 2-1 victory over Tottenham. Elliot Anderson’s fifth-minute volley and Chris Wood’s header in the 16th minute gave Forest a 2-0 lead, which Richarlison’s late goal couldn’t overcome. This win has bolstered Forest’s chances for qualifying for Europe next term, while increasing pressure on Tottenham’s manager, Ange Postecoglou.
The result highlights the challenges faced by Tottenham, who are currently struggling in 16th position. However, Spurs still have a chance to end the season with silverware, preparing for a showdown with Bodo/Glimt in the semi-finals of the Europa League.
