Her Majesty the Queen has been discharged from Oslo University Hospital
Queen Sonja of Norway has been discharged from an Oslo hospital on Tuesday, a day after being admitted with breathing difficulties, the royal palace said.
“Her Majesty the Queen has been discharged from Oslo University Hospital,” the palace announced in a statement. “The Queen was admitted due to shortness of breath. Examinations show that the situation has normalised.”
“The 87-year-old queen will be on sick leave for the remainder of the week, the palace added.
Queen Sonja was flown by medical helicopter from the royal chalet in Sikkilsdalen, where she and King Harald — Europe’s oldest reigning monarch at 88 — were spending the Easter holidays.
The royal family has traditionally celebrated Easter at the chalet since 1924, according to the NTB news agency.
Queen Sonja was briefly hospitalised in January after experiencing cardiac fibrillation, a rapid and irregular heartbeat. She later underwent a successful pacemaker procedure.
Queen Sonja’s husband, King Harald of Norway, has also been fitted with a pacemaker.
King Harald had become ill while he was on a private vacation with his wife, Queen Sonja, on the Malaysian resort island of Langkawi. Prior to receiving a permanent pacemaker, he had gotten ill while they were on the island. The patient’s low heart rate necessitated the installation of a temporary pacemaker while he remained in the hospital.
According to reports, King Harald of Norway has no intention of abdicating his throne despite the fact that he was admitted to the hospital in October 2020 with respiratory difficulties and underwent surgery to replace a heart valve.
