Nigerian defender Leon Balogun is set to leave Rangers at the end of the season as he is unlikely to be offered a new contract. The 36-year-old centre-back, who has been a loyal servant for the Gers during his two spells at Ibrox, will see his current deal expire at the end of the campaign.

According to Football Insider, Rangers’ incoming owners, 49ers Enterprises, are planning at least six new signings amid a summer spending spree. It is doubtful that the Glasgow club will table a new contract offer for the Nigeria international. Balogun was recently substituted against Athletic Club in the second leg of the Europa League at San Mames with an apparent injury. He later confirmed to the BBC that he had fractured his cheekbone again and might need minor surgery to fix it.

While the veteran defender expressed optimism about returning to action before the end of the season, the injury could potentially mean he has already played his final game for the Light Blues. The Super Eagles star has made 23 appearances in all competitions this term, impressing in several displays under managers Philippe Clement and Barry Ferguson.

However, his second spell at Rangers has been less successful than his first and marred by consistent injuries that have frustrated fans. Balogun initially joined Rangers in 2020 before departing for Queens Park Rangers in 2022, only to return to Ibrox in 2023. Despite his experience and contributions when fit, his injury problems combined with his age appear to have influenced the club’s decision.

With Rangers effectively out of the Scottish Premiership title race following Celtic’s dominance this season, and their Europa League journey now over, the club is already looking toward rebuilding for the next campaign. Balogun’s exit would mark the end of an era for the Nigerian defender, who has been a key figure in Rangers’ defense during his time at the club.
