The relegation of Leicester City from the Premier League has cast a shadow over the future of Nigerian midfielder Wilfred Ndidi. The 28-year-old has been linked with a summer move, with clubs like Galatasaray, Monaco, and Atletico Madrid reportedly interested in his services. Ndidi’s current contract with Leicester runs until 2027, but he is expected to leave the Premier League side in 2025.

Ndidi has played 24 games this season, scoring no goals but providing four assists. However, his season was marred by injuries, which kept him out of several games. Before the Foxes’ relegation, Ndidi was a subject of speculation, and his future is now more uncertain than ever.

“I expect him to leave the Premier League side in 2025,” a source close to the matter said, despite his current contract at Leicester. Ndidi had been linked with Barcelona last summer but opted to sign a new contract with Leicester. He was part of the side that won the FA Cup in 2020/21 for the first time in their history and then the FA Community Shield. He also played a pivotal role in their championship-winning season in 2023/24, scoring four times and assisting five goals in 32 appearances.

Other Nigerian players had varying fortunes in their respective leagues. Alex Iwobi scored his ninth EPL goal of the campaign but couldn’t save Fulham from a 2-1 defeat at home to Chelsea. Terem Moffi was dropped to the bench as Nice secured a 2-1 win against Angers, while Chuba Akpom failed to score in Lille’s 3-1 win against Auxerre.

In the Belgium Jupiler Pro League, Tolu Arokodare scored his 19th league goal of the season, but it was a mere consolation as Genk stumbled in the title race. Raphael Onyedika was involved from start to finish as Club Brugge hammered Gent 5-0 and took the top spot in the league. David Okereke bagged his ninth goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough to save Gaziantep from a 2-1 defeat at Basaksehir.

The performances of these Nigerian players will likely influence their moves in the upcoming transfer window. With Ndidi’s future uncertain, it remains to be seen what the future holds for him and his fellow Nigerian players.
