In a significant drug bust, Katsina State Police Command seized over 2,000 sachets of Tramadol, a widely abused opioid, worth N3.5 million. The seizure comes as part of the police’s ongoing efforts to curb the growing menace of substance abuse and illegal drug trafficking in northern Nigeria.
On March 20, 2025, following a tip-off, operatives from the Katsina State Police Command arrested 27-year-old Murtala Salisu of Bare-bari village in Safana LGA and Tanimu Abubakar of Jibia LGA, in possession of 2,084 sachets of suspected Tramadol. The arrested individuals are believed to be involved in a larger network of illegal drug distribution across northern Nigeria.
Tramadol has become a popular but dangerous substance among Nigerian youths, commercial drivers, and other vulnerable groups. The abuse of this potent painkiller has been linked to various health issues, including mental health problems, violent behavior, and an increase in criminal activities. As a result, authorities are placing a high priority on curbing the distribution of Tramadol in the region.
The Katsina Police Command’s success in this operation is attributed to the active involvement of local communities. Police spokesperson DSP Abubakar Sadiq praised the public for their timely tips, which were crucial in disrupting the drug trafficking network. “The collaboration between the public and the police is key to our success in eradicating drug trafficking in Katsina and beyond,” he stated.
The arrested suspects have confessed to their involvement in the illegal drug trade, with Salisu revealing he obtained the Tramadol from a supplier in Nasarawa State. The police are currently expanding their investigation in collaboration with law enforcement agencies in Nasarawa State to identify and apprehend the main suppliers.
With drug abuse becoming a pressing issue in northern Nigeria, authorities are ramping up efforts to enforce stricter penalties for traffickers. The Katsina State Police Command has emphasized that this operation is just one of many steps to tackle the wider issue of drug-related crimes in the state.
Authorities are also calling for the public to continue supporting the police by reporting suspicious activities, as they seek to dismantle drug trafficking syndicates operating across Nigeria.
The seizure of over 2,000 Tramadol sachets in Katsina is a crucial step in the battle against drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria. As the investigation continues, local authorities remain committed to enforcing anti-drug laws and providing a safer environment for communities in Katsina State and the wider northern region.
For ongoing updates, residents are encouraged to report any suspected criminal activity to the nearest police station.
