The British High Commission has strengthened UK-Nigeria ties by donating essential rugby equipment, including balls, boots, and jerseys, to the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF). The initiative, in collaboration with UK charity SOS Kit Aid, aims to foster rugby development in emerging nations.

At the donation ceremony, British Deputy High Commissioner Gill Lever commended Nigeria’s rapid rise in African rugby rankings, from 24th to 8th in just three years. She emphasized rugby’s role in promoting inclusion and resilience, particularly praising efforts to increase women’s participation. “Nigeria has the potential to become a global rugby contender,” Lever stated.

A representative of the National Sports Commission, speaking on behalf of Alhaji Mohammed Maigidasama, expressed gratitude for the UK’s support and called for similar aid to other sports federations.

NRFF General Manager Azeez Ladipo highlighted that the donation was provided at no cost to Nigeria, thanking the British High Commission and SOS Kit Aid.

Under NRFF President Dr. Ademola Are, Nigerian rugby has achieved significant milestones, including launching the girls-only Rugby Rising Play Programme, hiring elite coach Steve Lewis, and securing a victory against Ghana in the President’s Cup.

The donation is expected to further accelerate the sport’s growth in Nigeria.
