Nasarawa United has vehemently denied widespread claims that a Plateau United player, Vincent Temitope, was stabbed following their Nigeria Premier Football League matchday 33 fixture in Lafia. In an official statement, the Lafia-based club described the reports as “baseless” and “false.”

Incident Details
According to Nasarawa United, a physical altercation did occur between a spectator and Temitope, but the incident was grossly exaggerated. “Contrary to the sensationalised reports, a physical altercation did occur between a spectator, who is not a supporter of our club, and Plateau United’s Vincent Temitope,” the statement said. “Eye witnesses confirmed that the spectator used his sharp fingers, not a knife, or any other dangerous weapon as purportedly reported, to slightly bruise the player’s neck.”

Club’s Account
The club’s account also suggested that Temitope’s earlier conduct contributed to the situation. “The same Temitope narrowly escaped the referee’s (Rashidat Abdulganiyu’s) red card after headbutting Nasarawa United’s goalkeeper, Detan Ogundare,” the statement said. “He might have allowed his frustration to take a toll on him, leading him to vent his anger on anything along his path.”

Treatment and Aftermath
Nasarawa United confirmed that Temitope was treated for minor injuries and later rejoined his team. “Vincent Temitope was taken to a nearby medical facility where his bruises were dressed, before being reunited with his teammates at their hotel accommodation,” the club said. The individual involved in the scuffle was immediately arrested by police for further investigation.

NPFL’s Response
Despite Nasarawa United’s attempt to downplay the incident, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed a fine of ₦6m and ordered the club to play their remaining home games this season away from Lafia. The league body’s response underscores the seriousness with which such incidents are viewed in the sport.

The NPFL’s decision to fine Nasarawa United ₦6m and order the club to play their remaining home games away from Lafia sends a strong message about the importance of maintaining order and safety in Nigerian football. The league body’s response highlights the need for clubs to take responsibility for the actions of their fans and ensure that matches are played in a safe and respectful environment.

This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by football authorities in Nigeria and the need for continued efforts to promote a positive and safe experience for players, officials, and fans alike.
