WhatsApp, the widely used messaging application, will stop to function on numerous older smartphones as of May 5, 2025, as a result of modifications to its compatibility with antiquated operating systems.

Meta’s ongoing endeavors to guarantee optimal performance and maintain security across newer hardware and operating systems are reflected in this course of action.

“The changes are part of regular updates to ensure the app stays secure and functional while working with newer phones.”

As WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business share identical system requirements, the decision will influence both applications.

Affected iPhones:

  • iOS versions earlier than 15.1
  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus

There are some iPhones that can be updated to match the new requirement; however, these particular models can only be upgraded to iOS 12.5.7, which is no longer compatible with WhatsApp’s most recent version. The first versions of these mobile devices were shipped out in 2013 and 2014.

The support for Android KitKat (version 4.4 and earlier) was discontinued by WhatsApp earlier in the year, on January 1, 2025. Although there are a few KitKat devices that may still function with a system upgrade, many older models are no longer receiving updates from their respective makers.
